Year after year, our employees tell us they love coming to work at The Motley Fool for the purpose they believe in, the autonomy to do their best work, and the opportunity to tackle challenges in a fun environment with supportive colleagues.
Sound like good reasons to love your job? Then join us! We have full time and contract roles. Together, we will change the financial futures of millions of people around the world.
No pressure or anything, but this is SUPER important. We receive lots of applications, and if we’re being honest, we like to feel special. What makes us feel special? A cover letter that’s written to and for us, a clear indication of the role for which you’re applying, and some well thought out (doesn’t necessarily mean long) answers to our application questions.
Pro Tip: Spend just as much time telling us who you are as you spend telling us what you can do.
Take a deep breath. This phone interview will probably feel like one of those great conversations you have at a barbecue when you meet someone new and hit it off. At this point in the process, we just want to get to know you better: who you are, what you’re looking for, what makes you thrive, and what makes you tick. We’ll go over the role you’ve applied for, the team you’d be working with, and how the work that team does advances our mission and purpose.
If our Recruiting Team thinks you could be a strong addition to the team, we’ll advance you on to the Hiring Manager phone interview stage. Here’s where the real fun begins. Our hiring managers will seize this opportunity to dig a little deeper into your technical chops for the role, poking and prodding around the previous experiences listed on your resume and double clicking into the most interesting parts of your application.
Pro Tip: Think ahead about some of the more notable experiences in your career: the most interesting project you’ve worked on, the most challenging code you’ve written, the best-performing marketing campaign you’ve designed. We’d love to hear about it!
Congratulations! Your phone interviews have left us impressed, and now we’re ready to see what you can do. This testing phase of our process is incredibly important. Interviewing well is a skill, and not everyone has it. That doesn’t mean that you’re not a great investor/ accountant/ copywriter/ etc. Testing gives us an opportunity to evaluate you based on a simulated output that we might expect IRL (not just based on your ability to answer tough questions on the spot from strangers on the phone). Plus, it’s a great topic to discuss if we have the opportunity to meet you in the next phase…
Congrats on making it to the last phase of our recruiting process! During the course of your Zoom panel interview, you’ll meet with a collection of Fools (usually between 6-10) that are cycling in and out of our virtual Zoom room in pairs. You’ll find that some of the Fools on your panel may have different specialties or come from other teams at the company. We like to assemble a cross-functional interview panel that can help us more holistically assess our candidates, prevent group-think, and offer different Fool perspectives.
Don’t stress too much about replicating a perfectly professional environment while you interview from home. Dogs bark, cats step on our keyboards, our kids are never quiet, and the FedEx delivery driver always needs a signature in the middle of our meetings. At least that’s been our experience. We’re a laid back bunch, and we want you to feel as comfortable as possible.
Pro Tip: Go ahead and spend some time finding Fools from your interview panel online (LinkedIn, professional association websites, podcast recordings, etc.). They’re happy to chat about their own experiences with you as well!
Waiting is the hardest part, right? We won’t keep you waiting too long, but we do need to gather the whole gang together to debrief on all of our candidates for your role and determine to whom we’d like to make an offer. We’ll go through your application materials one more time, review and share notes from previous phone and panel interviews, and have a healthy debate about who our future teammates might be. We’re eager to move forward, so you’ll hear from your recruiter as soon as we’ve settled on our future Fool.
We’re a fairly laid back environment, but understand you still want to put your best foot forward for that killer first impression. Might we suggest business casual?
Zoom panel interviews typically consist of 3-4 rounds of interviews, each with 2-3 Fools. Most of the Fools you meet with will be from the team in which your role resides, but we scatter a few cross-functional Fools in as well. Why so many people? For us, your ability to do the job is almost as important as your ability to do it collaboratively within a high-functioning team. Almost.
We’ll let you know who you’re meeting with in advance so there are no surprises (and you have plenty of time to find their story on LinkedIn).
Yes! We’ve recently transitioned to a “virtual first” workplace, which reflects our commitment to creating a seamless, equitable, and inclusive experience for every Fool around the world, whether they come to an office or not.
We are currently open to work in the following states: Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Texas, North Carolina, California, Colorado, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Oregon, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, New Jersey, and Louisiana.
Not every business within The Motley Fool is open in each of the above states, so talk with your recruiter about the possibilities for your target job opportunity.
We’ll conduct your panel interview via Zoom. If you haven’t used Zoom before, head over to zoom.us/join beforehand to make sure you can download the app. On interview day, pick a quiet place with a strong, reliable internet connection. If something goes awry during your interview (Power went out! Spilled water on my computer!), email or call your recruiting contact and we’ll figure out a solution together. Oh, and let us know in advance if you require any accommodations. We are here to support you in putting your best foot forward.
Year after year, we ask our Fools what keeps them here. And year after year, we hear the same response. Here’s the top four things Fools love about working at The Motley Fool:
If these four factors are important to you and your happiness at work, then the Fool might be the perfect place for you.
