We believe in delivering working software early and often. We build primarily in Python, Typescript, and React, but we also have projects in Django/Vue, WordPress/PHP, and .Net Core stacks. Our cloud provider of choice is AWS for both cloud-native and cloud-hosted architectures. We strongly advocate for autonomy, transparency, intellectual diversity, and healthy discourse. Whether you’re new to the workforce or a senior member of the team, your opinions and ideas will be heard.

How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
The concentration of talent, passion, and thoughtfulness surrounding us speaks volumes about our culture. I’ve developed life-long friendships during my time here at The Fool — connections that extend beyond just professional relationships.
What surprised you the most about working at the Fool when you were new?

When I first started, I was terrified. Impostor syndrome set in immediately. But what surprised me most was how quickly my team accepted me—not just professionally on a technical level, but personally too.

The genuine sense of camaraderie helped melt away all the anxieties that typically come with starting a new job, joining a new team, and adapting to a new environment. This welcoming atmosphere was truly unexpected and made all the difference in my transition.

What’s the best thing about working at TMF?
Aside from the incredible benefits program, flexible remote-first working environment, and competitive compensation packages, it’s the Fools I have the opportunity and privilege to work with every day that truly makes the difference.

CloudOps

How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
When we say we care about our people and our members, we mean it. I see this every day, from interactions with my colleagues to how we approach our products. It’s in our DNA.
What surprised you the most about working at the Fool when you were new?
What surprised me the most was the tenure of so many Fools here, and the freedom I had to make my own path and pursue my interests.

Our team at TMF plays a pivotal role in sourcing and supporting top-tier contractors. We are committed to finding exceptional talent, offering them meaningful opportunities, and nurturing their professional goals. This focused approach ensures that our contractors are not only well-matched for their roles but are also equipped to contribute significantly to TMF’s vision of making the world smarter, happier, and richer.
How does your team help make the world smarter, happier, and richer?
TMF’s Editorial Contractors collaborate with some of the industry’s finest investment writers to produce content that reaches and educates millions every month. By dissecting company news and ensuring clarity and insight in every piece, they play a pivotal role in making readers smarter, happier, and richer. Similarly, Tech Contractors at TMF are instrumental in pioneering the next wave of digital solutions. Their work in optimizing platforms and leveraging cutting-edge cloud technology contributes significantly to technological advancements, aiding in creating a smarter and more efficient world.
How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
At TMF, the contracting experience is uniquely Foolish, setting it apart from other workplaces. Even as a contractor, you’ll be immersed in an environment where random gratitude chains are a norm, and a Slack-based “contractor-clubhouse” is a hub of engagement (pet photos and Dad jokes are highly encouraged). Here, the journey is yours to carve, and fitting into a conventional “mold” is never expected.
What’s the best thing about contracting at TMF?
One of the best aspects of contracting at TMF is being part of a culture that genuinely cares for and respects its contractors. At TMF, contractors are not seen as temporary or peripheral members, but as integral parts of the team, contributing significantly to the company’s mission and goals. As a contractor, you’re encouraged to be yourself, share your perspectives, and become immersed in a community that values your individuality. This respectful and caring approach, combined with TMF’s vibrant and unconventional culture, makes contracting here a truly distinct and rewarding experience.

By building internal and external programs to help Fools recognize and understand how motley the world truly is, we can better imagine ways to best serve and provide financial guidance to our current and future Members.
How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
Paying homage to our company name, we like to bring jest to our day-to-day! We genuinely believe that Finance can be (and should be) fun!
What surprised you the most about working at the Fool when you were new?
When I was new, I was surprised by how quickly and selflessly so many Fools offered their time and help to ensure I was set up for success in my career. If I had a question, there were a dozen Fools ready with an answer and additional guidance. The support and encouragement I experienced nearly a decade ago are something that I continue to see today.
What’s the best thing about working at TMF?
I am impressed by each Fool’s commitment to bringing their A-game to each task and ask. You’ll frequently find Fools attending conferences, reading books, and upskilling to increase their knowledge and drive more value to the company and its stakeholders. And you’ll be encouraged to do the same!

The Motley Fool’s legal team provides advice on a wide ranging spectrum of topics including marketing, regulatory/statutory compliance (investment advisors act of 1940), privacy (GDPR, CCPA), information security, corporate transactions, and strategic executive advice to The Motley Fool’s management team and Board of Directors.
How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
Culture – and I don’t mean just happy hours or industry-leading benefits. The Motley Fool has created and sustained a culture where I believe my co-workers and my company truly care about my professional and personal well being. The company puts its money where its mouth is not only through its rhetoric but more importantly, through its actions.
What surprised you the most about working at the Fool when you were new?
The list of what surprised me (and what continues to surprise me) is long – but certainly how quickly my team welcomed me and how quickly I felt comfortable has to be at the top of the list.
What’s the best thing about working at TMF?
I will do my best and limit my answer here to two things. Firstly – The Motley Fool is as mission oriented a company as I have ever been a part of. To feel like you are a part of something bigger than yourself is incredibly motivating. Secondly – it is impossible to overstate the value of enjoying who you work with. There will always be challenges at The Motley Fool but accomplishments are made sweeter and mistakes are softened because in the end, I get to work with friends.

How does your team help make the world smarter, happier, and richer?
We ensure that every article is clear and well-rounded. We believe readers should know what’s behind the noise of company news to become better investors, ultimately achieving our mission.
How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
I believe I can say I’ve done it all. I’ve worked at various places: a public accounting firm, a state department, and a publicly-traded corporation. TMF was the one place where I’d experienced random gratitude chains that weren’t prompted by a holiday.
What surprised you the most about working at the Fool when you were new?
Most employees followed a non-traditional path to their roles at the Fool, myself included (I went from an accounting career to becoming an editor). My career here really can be what I make it, and that’s welcomed.
What’s the best thing about working at TMF?
TMF encourages employees to share their thoughts and opinions even when dissenting. It’s refreshing to know that no one here likes to fit the “mold” mindlessly.

What’s your team responsible for?
The multimedia team is responsible for all the media the Fool produces. From podcasts, to marketing content, to YouTube videos.
What do you do on the team?
I shoot, edit, and add motion graphics to videos as well as graphic design for web content.
How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
The Fool trusts its people in a way that’s unlike any place I’ve ever worked. From the vacation policy to the way we handle sick leave to everyday assignments and tasks, the Fool trusts you to do great work and gives you the resources to succeed all along the way. For me that trust has fostered some of the best work of my career and given me a sense of accomplishment that would’ve been impossible somewhere else.
What’s life like on your team?
It’s fast-paced and always interesting. Every day brings a new set of challenges and solutions.
What surprised you the most about working at the Fool when you were new here?
The Fool is the most motley place I’ve ever worked. The variety and quality of people in the building always astounds me. We’ve got former musicians, entrepreneurs, teachers, just about every background or interest you can think of. I’ve never been around so many fascinating people.
Tell us about a project you worked on that you’re particularly proud of.
We put together a video for a product based on international stocks. The video involved filming around the world and turned out better than I could’ve hoped for. It was a dynamic project that pushed my own creative limits.

What’s your team responsible for?
We are what most people might call Human Resources but we hold ourselves accountable for making Fools Smarter, Happier, and Richer throughout what we want to be a long and successful career. That could mean lots of things: career coaching, employee recognition, health and wellness, and professional development. We are highly data-driven to make sure we spend our budgets in the most effective, shareholder-friendly way possible.
How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
TMF is not afraid of trying new things – we have freedom and autonomy to test and learn and admit our mistakes and own them and enjoy them.
Tell us about a project you worked on that you’re particularly proud of.
Ask for a Raise Day in 2018 was definitely memorable. We wanted to encourage Fools at every level to overcome the discomfort and awkwardness of talking about compensation. I personally did over 100 1:1 coaching sessions with our employees and learned so much about common concerns and misunderstandings that it improved our rewards system for years to come afterwards.
What’s the most challenging thing about working at TMF?
We are a constant firehose of ideas and wanting to “top it.” Enthusiasm to innovate comes from all directions, at all times. Saying no to great ideas is hard. While it isn’t fun to be on the receiving end of “I love your enthusiasm, but….” knowing that a new project is probably right around the corner with a collaborative team makes that easier.

Marketing

BUILDING AND PROMOTING THE FOOLISH BRAND

Marketing collectively keeps a pulse on the ever-changing world of communication. We aim to appeal to all types of customers, from the seasoned investor to prospects completely unfamiliar with the Fool. To target a wide range of audiences, Marketing Fools consistently test new methods and gather frequent feedback. Main paths of admission are traditional paid marketing channels or our world class editorial content found for free on Fool.com and partner sites. But our marketing work doesn’t stop there. Once a part of the Foolish community, we’re consistently seeking to guide members to the right solution within our product suite – whether that’s introducing them to services that speak to their specific area of investing interest or leveling them up to a more advanced product when the time is right.

What’s your team responsible for?
The channels team is responsible for identifying, creating, and scaling cost-effective customer acquisition campaigns across several new and established marketing audiences. We develop advertising campaigns and help produce creative assets. We identify and grow prospecting and remarketing audiences and use analytics to inform decisions. And we carefully leverage a significant marketing budget to buy ad inventory to achieve company goals.
How does your team help make the world smarter, happier, and richer?
By bringing new members to our services and providing them with outstanding business and investment advice (smarter), we empower wealth development (richer), which unlocks financial freedom to do the things that are important in their lives (happier).
What’s life like on your team?
I work with an amazing and diverse team, and diversity comes in many forms: gender, ethnicity, age, and thinking. We ground ourselves around three pillars:
  • Flexibility: We adapt, we are open to new opportunities, we approach projects and work with positive Foolish energy, and we support one another.
  • Efficiency: We know our business inside and out and use return on marketing spend as our north star. We continually test out new partners, new creatives, new tactics, and illuminate prospects’ journeys.
  • Expertise: One of our team’s top competitive advantages is our data-rich approach to direct-response marketing and our knowledge of the channels we operate in. We are experts at our craft, but never stop learning, and we share that knowledge with the team through documentation and conversation.
Our team has a sharing culture — we share the good and the bad — but we are also highly competitive and challenge each other, which brings out the best in each of us and leads to great team results.
What surprised you the most about working at the Fool when you were new here?
The ability to express a contrarian opinion, which is not just accepted, but encouraged. Our ability to express dissent and have constructive dialogue makes our products, services, and processes better and our teams stronger.
What’s your best piece of advice to someone who is thinking about applying to The Motley Fool?
Believe the hype! The Motley Fool is better than we can explain on our website, and a place where your career growth is only limited by your motivation and desire.

We all collaborate with Fools across our organization to keep all of TMF informed on our business. We help solve problems large and small: from helping individuals understand their paycheck to helping our leaders decide how to allocate capital. Our team makes sure all Fools are operating efficiently and effectively.
How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
TMF is the most open workplace I’ve ever been a part of. Everyone’s (virtual) door is always open. You can send a slack message to the CEO, your boss, your peer and everyone in between and be met with an above and beyond response to your question or concern.
What surprised you the most about working at the Fool when you were new?
The level of trust across all levels of the organization was the most surprising but also the most refreshing. You are always given the benefit of the doubt and met with respect whenever you voice an opinion or share a personal challenge. It allows me to show up as myself and rarely feel self-conscious about what I have to say.
What’s the best thing about working at TMF?
The best thing about working at TMF is by far the people. Working from home can sometimes be isolating, but all you have to do is slack someone to have coffee or start a quick zoom chat and there’s someone there to support you. There’s constantly a new competition, game, or class to participate in that makes you feel connected because everyone genuinely wants to be there and enjoys each other’s company.

What’s your team responsible for?
The Investing team at the Fool is responsible for providing best-in-class research into companies and stocks that can help our members generate market beating results over the long-term.
How does your team help make the world smarter, happier and richer?
Educating is at the core of what we do – we‘re constantly learning and expanding our and our member‘s circle of competence. We‘re empowering our customers to take control of their financial futures by learning about businesses, setting up a path to reach their goals, and hopefully having a bit of fun along the way!
How is TMF different from other places you’ve worked?
The Fool simply can‘t compare to other financial services businesses. Before I found myself at the Fool, I almost left the industry entirely simply because it was so difficult to find a place where I could do what I love (stock and business research) while also feeling like I was helping people in the process. In my opinion, the Fool is unique in that our mission truly finds itself weaved into my everyday work.
What’s life like on your team?
If you‘re someone who lives and breathes long-term investing, you‘ll wake up every day and have to pinch yourself that you‘re actually getting paid to do this! While no day is the same, generally speaking you‘ll find yourself pouring over 10ks, chatting with coworkers about the merits of different investments, and exploring new ideas. The best part is that you‘re never thinking about what may happen next week, next quarter or even next year: you‘re picking out ideas that can become massive opportunities for the long haul.
What’s the best thing about working at TMF?
If you work in equity research, there are a lot of benefits at the Fool that are truly refreshing: great work/life balance, high levels of autonomy, flexible leadership, and even unlimited vacation (yes, truly unlimited. I‘ve been able to take three international trips this year alone!). However, the best thing about working here is truly the trust. I‘ve never worked at an organization that starts from a position of trust in each and every person. We trust our employees, treat everyone with mutual respect, and empower our coworkers to make decisions and take the lead when needed. Doubt isn‘t in the Fool‘s vocabulary and we act with conviction in our employee base from day one.
